BEACH safety FLAGs

Everyone should learn how to stay safe in the surf, sand, and sun. The beach and the ocean hide many hazards. It's not just waves that might be a danger, but also rip currents, jellyfish or strong winds to look out for. Some flags may be used in pairs spaced apart to indicate a designated area or zone, closely supervised or patrolled by lifeguards. Others may be placed along the beach, warning of danger. You may also see an orange windsock, used to indicate the direction of offshore winds, telling you it's unsafe for inflatables.

SUN safety

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and rates continue to rise. At least 100,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Experiencing sunburn, particularly in childhood, increases the risk of developing skin cancer in later life, so it's very important to protect both you and your family from the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage skin and is the main preventable cause of skin cancer. Find out more from the British Skin Foundation and be sure to #SlipSlopSlap at the beach.

SURF safety

Whether in Porthcawl or on any beach, maximise your enjoyment and stay safe when riding waves by understanding surf etiquette, which applies to all boardriders catching waves. Waves can be unpredictable at the best of times so never just paddle out if unsure. Ask yourself 'would I be able to swim back to the shore in that surf'. If in doubt, don't go out!
